Grey Blending Is Not the Same as Covering Grey

It often starts with a few silver strands at the temple that catch the light in the car mirror. Then a few more along the part. Then one morning you are standing at the bathroom sink, wondering whether to cover every one of them or just make the whole thing quieter.
Those are two different services, and they grow out in two very different ways. Covering grey means permanent color that hides every silver strand, right up until the roots grow in. Grey blending means a sheer, temporary tint that tones the grey down so it reads as softness instead of contrast, then fades away on its own.
Here is the short version. If you want the grey gone, book coverage: Root Touch Up with Blow Dry starts at $130 for returning color guests, and All Over Color with Blow-dry starts at $170. If you want the grey softer but still yours, Grey Blending is an add-on that starts at $65. Below is how each one works, how each grows out, and the question our colorists ask to find out which one you actually want.
What does covering grey actually mean?
Covering grey uses permanent color. It goes inside the hair strand, so the silver takes on the shade you chose and keeps it until that hair is cut off.
That is the appeal. It is solid, it is predictable, and it does not wash out. Grey hair can be stubborn about taking color, which is one reason your colorist builds the formula for your hair instead of reaching for a box shade.
The trade-off is the root. Hair grows roughly half an inch a month, and the new growth comes in silver. Against darker color that line shows early, which is why guests who cover their grey tend to keep a steady rhythm of root touch-ups.
On our menu, Root Touch Up with Blow Dry starts at $130 and is for returning guests with one inch or less of regrowth. For a first color with us, or a longer root, All Over Color with Blow-dry starts at $170. Returning guests who live close by can also book an Express Root Touch-Up, starting at $75, where we apply the color and wrap your hair so it can process at home.
So what is grey blending?
Grey Blending is a demi-permanent color, mixed for you and applied at the shampoo bowl. The color itself takes about ten minutes, and the add-on books as a 30-minute slot.
It does not try to erase the grey. It gives the silver a translucent tint so it sits closer to the hair around it. Instead of bright white strands against darker hair, you see softer, blended dimension. The grey is still there if you look for it. It just stops being the first thing anyone notices.
Then it fades. Over about four weeks it washes out gradually, without the hard line permanent color leaves behind. No stripe at the part, and no countdown to your next appointment.
Grey Blending (add on) starts at $65 and goes with another hair service, most often a haircut. Our menu calls it a great addition to men's cuts, and it is. It also suits anyone whose grey is just starting to show and who is not ready to commit to permanent color.
Why does blending grow out so much softer?
It comes down to where the color sits. Permanent color changes the hair it touches, and that hair stays changed. When new silver grows in underneath, the edge between the two is sharp.
Demi-permanent color tints the hair rather than rebuilding its color, and it lets go a little with every wash. By the time your hair has grown, the blend has faded with it, so there is no edge between old and new. The grey simply comes back into view, slowly and evenly.
That is the whole difference in one sentence. Coverage keeps its color and leaves you a line. Blending gives its color back and leaves you no line.
It is also why blending will not hide every strand. If your goal is no visible grey at all, a sheer tint will not get you there, and we will tell you that up front.
Which one do you actually want?
Our colorists start with one question: do you want it to look different, or just look right again?
With grey, the answer usually sorts itself out right there. Look different, meaning no grey and a shade you chose, points toward coverage. Look right again, meaning you, a little softer, with the grey in the background, usually points toward blending. From there, your colorist checks three things.
- How much grey there is, and where. A scattering at the temples and part blends beautifully. Grey through most of the head may need more than a sheer tint to look even.
- How you feel about upkeep. Coverage asks for a steady rhythm of touch-ups. Blending asks for very little, because it fades on its own.
- Where you are headed. If you are thinking about letting your natural silver come through, blending has no line to grow out, so it never stands in your way.
Will they push me toward coverage?
No. A consultation is part of the service, not a formality. We would rather spend ten minutes talking than guess, and with grey, that conversation decides everything.
There is no hard sell here. Our team motto for more than 25 years has been What's Best For The Guest. If a quick blend at the bowl is all your hair needs, that is what you will hear.
What happens in the chair?
When you arrive, you are offered Aveda's comforting tea and a warm neck wrap. It is a small thing, and it is usually the moment shoulders start to come down.
For coverage, your colorist parts your hair into thin sections and brushes color onto the regrowth. You feel a cool line along your part, then another, working back toward the crown. It processes while you sit with your tea, then it is the shampoo bowl, a blow-dry and the mirror.
Grey blending happens almost entirely at the bowl. You lean back into warm water, your colorist works the formula through, and it sits for a few minutes before it is rinsed away. Neck, shoulder and scalp massage are available on request during hair services, so if you want one, say the word.
Then comes the haircut or blow-dry you booked it with, and you see the result in good light before you leave.
What do we tell our friends?
Bring the photo of the color you do not want. It tells your colorist more than a dozen pictures of the color you do. With grey, that might be a flat, solid color you never want again, or the stripe of regrowth that drove you crazy last spring.
And be honest about the upkeep you will actually keep. A plan you can stick to beats a perfect plan that falls apart in week six. If you know you will not be back every month, say so. That alone can tip the answer toward blending.
If you choose coverage, book your next touch-up before you leave. A solid rebook and the right home care are the two best things we can send you out the door with.
How do I keep it looking right at home?
What you do at home decides how long the result lasts. We recommend a small routine, not a cabinet full of products.
A gentle shampoo matters even more with demi-permanent color, since every wash takes a little of it with it. Aveda has been our exclusive partner since 2003, and its Color Control line is what we reach for with color guests, coverage and blending alike. Start with Color Control Conditioner after every wash. If your hair runs dry or you heat style most days, add a leave-in: Light for fine to medium hair, Rich for medium to thick.
Then the free part: lukewarm water instead of hot, and a little less heat styling when you can manage it. Your colorist will tell you which leave-in, if any, fits your hair.

Questions we hear at the desk
How long does grey blending last?
The demi-permanent color fades gradually over about four weeks, without leaving a line of demarcation. It softens a little with every wash, so the grey comes back into view slowly instead of showing up as a stripe at the part. Many guests simply add it again with their next haircut.
Will grey blending cover all of my grey?
No, and it is not meant to. It is a translucent tint that softens silver strands so they sit closer to the hair around them. If you want no visible grey at all, permanent coverage is the right service, and your colorist will tell you that plainly at your consultation.
Why is there a price range for each color service?
Our hair stylists work at Studio, Senior and Master levels, and the price follows the level. It is not a ranking of who is better, it is where each artist is on their path. Grey Blending starts at $65, and the front desk can give you the exact price for the artist you book.
Do I need a separate consultation before I decide?
No. Every hair service at Amenities begins with a personal consultation, so the conversation happens in the chair. Your colorist looks at how much grey you have and where, asks how much upkeep you want, and recommends one service. If you are unsure, mention it when you book so we plan enough time.
Whether you want every silver strand gone or just want it to stop being the first thing you see, the answer starts with one conversation. We are at 5054 N Palm Ave in Fig Garden Village, open seven days a week, with free parking and no meters. Tell us how you feel about your grey, and we will tell you honestly which service fits.
