Switching Your Facial Routine for Fresno's Dry Fall Air

By the Amenities Team  ·  September 25, 2026

Aveda aroma rose and jasmine spa product at Amenities Day Spa and Salon

By the second week of October we start hearing the same sentence on the facial bed, usually about ten minutes in. My skin has been weird lately, and I have not changed anything. Then we ask what she is using, and it is the routine that carried her through a Fresno August: the foaming cleanser, the light lotion, the mattifying step she added in July when everything felt shiny.

Nothing is weird. The routine is simply out of season. Valley air in October pulls water out of skin faster than August air did, and a routine built to manage oil and sweat has nothing left to give back. Here is what to change first, the four signs it is already time, and which facial fits a drier month once you are in the room with us.

Your skin did not change. The air did.

Skin holds water about as well as a sponge left on the counter. In humid air it stays soft on its own. When the air dries out, water leaves through the surface faster than skin replaces it, and the outer layer tightens, roughens, and stops reflecting light evenly. That is the flat, slightly grainy look most guests notice in the mirror before they notice anything else.

Fresno makes the turn sharper than most places do. A long, hot summer trains all of us into an oil-control routine, and then dry fall air arrives over about a week. The air conditioning goes off, the heater comes on, and more moisture goes with it.

After more than 25 years in Fig Garden Village, our estheticians could nearly set a calendar by it. The first cool mornings arrive, and the week after that the book fills with guests saying their foundation has started sitting on top of their face instead of sinking in.

Four signs your routine is out of season

You do not have to guess at this. Skin gives the same four signals almost every year, and our estheticians hear them described at the front desk before a guest is ever on the bed. They tend to arrive in this order.

  • Tightness after washing that lasts more than a minute or two, worst across the cheeks and around the mouth.
  • Makeup that used to blend and now catches on dry patches, or separates by mid afternoon.
  • A dull, uneven surface. Not a breakout, not redness, just skin that has stopped catching the light.
  • Stinging from a product you have used happily for months, most often a toner, an acid, or a vitamin C serum.

The fourth sign is the one people get wrong

A product that suddenly stings is rarely the villain. It usually means the surface it is landing on has been worn thin by the air, and the job is to rebuild that surface, not to go buy a gentler version of the same bottle.

This is also the point where we will tell you to stop shopping. If your skin needs nothing new from our shelf, you will hear that from your esthetician, plainly, in the room.

Change your cleanser before you change anything else

Here is what our estheticians tell their own friends, and it is almost never what a guest expects. When the air turns, the first product to change is not the moisturizer. It is the cleanser.

A foaming or gel cleanser earns its place in July. It clears sweat, sunscreen, and oil, and your skin feels clean partly because a little of its own surface oil went down the drain too. In October that clean feeling is the problem. You are washing away the layer you now need, twice a day, then asking a cream to put it back.

Switch to a milk or a cream-to-oil cleanser at night, and keep the foaming one for mornings if your T zone still runs oily. Most guests notice a difference in three or four days.

We are not trying to sell you a shelf. What you do at home decides how long anything we do in the room lasts, and a small routine you actually follow beats a cabinet of half-used bottles every time.

Which facial fits a drier month

Once the air has taken its toll, an hour on the bed does in one visit what home care does slowly over a month. The question is which hour.

For most guests in October it is A Pure Hydration Facial 60 Min, $155. It is built around putting water back and sealing it in, and it is the one we reach for when skin is tight, flat, and reacting to things it used to like.

A Delicate Peel Facial 60 Min, $185, is the other side of the same problem. When dryness leaves a rough, uneven surface, that dead top layer is part of why nothing you apply seems to sink in. This is gentle resurfacing, not a strong acid peel, and it is what we suggest once hydration alone has stopped being enough.

If you are short on time or new to facials, Focus Facial 30 Min is $85: a cleanse, one treatment step, and a finish, chosen for what your skin is doing that day.

Our estheticians will not guess between the three. Every facial opens with a look at your skin and a few questions about what you have been using, because a consultation is part of the service here, not a formality. Our facials use Aveda and Comfort Zone professional skin care.

What the hour actually feels like

You are offered Aveda's comforting tea and a warm neck wrap before anything begins, which is how every visit here starts, hair or spa. Most guests stop checking their phone somewhere in the first five minutes.

In the room the lights come down. Your esthetician cleanses, looks at your skin under a lamp, and tells you what she sees before she picks a single product. There is a mask, and while it sets there is usually a hand and arm massage, and a foot soak with calming Aveda and Comfort Zone aromas if you booked the time for it.

The part guests describe afterward is the steam and the warm towel over the face. That is the moment the room goes quiet and the tightness lets go.

What to change at home, in order

Your routine does not need to double in size. It needs three adjustments, and the order matters more than the price of anything in it.

When your esthetician sends you home with something, it is part of taking care of you, not a pitch at the desk. A rebook and the right home care are the two best things we can send anyone out the door with, and in a dry month the home care does most of the work between visits.

  • Cleanser first, as above. Milk or cream-to-oil at night, foaming in the morning only if you still need it.
  • Add water, then lock it in. A hydrating ampoule pressed into damp skin, then a richer cream over the top. Most fall routines are missing the first half of that pair.
  • Leave your actives mostly alone for two weeks. Retinol and acids are not the enemy, but a thinned surface is not the moment to push them. Go back once washing your face stops leaving you tight.

Questions we hear at the desk

How do I know whether my skin needs hydration or exfoliation?

If it feels tight and reactive, start with hydration. If it feels rough and nothing you apply seems to absorb, the surface needs exfoliating first. When you truly cannot tell, book the hydration facial and say so in the room. Your esthetician can adjust the treatment step in either direction.

Can I skip the cleanser change and just use a heavier moisturizer?

You can add the richer cream, and plenty of guests do, but a stripping cleanser undoes it twice a day. Changing the cleanser costs you nothing in time and is the change guests report back on first. Keep your foaming cleanser for summer mornings and bring a milk cleanser in for fall nights.

Is a peel a bad idea when my skin is already dry?

Not automatically, but timing matters. A Delicate Peel Facial 60 Min is gentle and is meant for exactly this kind of dull, rough surface. If your skin is stinging at plain water right now, we would rather hydrate you first and put the peel on the books two or three weeks out.

How far ahead of an event should I book a facial?

Give yourself at least a week if there is any exfoliation involved, so your skin has settled and your makeup goes on the way you expect. A hydration facial is different. It is calm enough that many guests book it for the day before, and some the morning of.
