Your First Facial: What Happens in the Room, Start to Finish

Maybe someone gave you a gift card, or maybe you have simply been meaning to do this for years. Either way, you are about to book your first facial, and there is a small voice asking what exactly happens in there. Do I take off my makeup first? Will it hurt? What if my skin is a mess?
This post walks you through the whole hour, start to finish, so nothing is a surprise. If you only want the short answer: for most first-time guests, we suggest A Elemental Nature Facial 60min, which is $135. It is customized to your skin, it includes a hand, arm, decollete and foot massage, and it is the gentlest introduction to what a facial can do.
Before you arrive
You do not need to prepare your skin. Come as you are, makeup and all. Your esthetician will take everything off as part of the service, and seeing your skin exactly as it looks on an ordinary day actually helps them.
Give yourself a few extra minutes so you are not rushing in from the parking lot. We are in Fig Garden Village, with free parking and no meters, so there is no clock running outside. If you use any prescription skin care, or have had a peel, a sunburn or a new skin reaction lately, make a note to mention it. It changes what your esthetician will reach for.
And please do not worry about the state of your skin. Our licensed estheticians have seen every kind of skin there is. Nobody walks in with perfect skin, and nobody is expected to.
The first few minutes
Your visit begins the way every visit here does, with Aveda's comforting tea and a warm neck wrap while you settle in. We see our guests as guests, not customers, and that first cup is our way of saying slow down, you are here now.
Then your esthetician walks you to the treatment room. The lights are low, it is quiet, and the treatment bed is ready for you. You will have privacy to get comfortable before the facial begins.
The facial starts with a conversation. What bothers you about your skin? What are you using at home? How does your skin usually react to new products? We treat this as part of the service, not a formality. Those few questions decide everything that happens next, which is why the Elemental Nature Facial is called customized.
Cleanse, look, and exfoliate
First comes a thorough cleanse with Aveda or Comfort Zone professional skincare chosen for your skin. It is unhurried and gentle, and the warm water and soft hands are often the moment first-time guests start to relax.
If you are curious about what is going on your face, ask. Aveda has been our exclusive partner since 2003, and its products are plant-based, 96% naturally derived, vegan and cruelty-free. Plant-based products are a choice we made back then and have never walked back, and your esthetician is happy to tell you what each step is and why they chose it.
Next, your esthetician takes a close look at your skin under good light. This is where they notice what you might not: areas that are dehydrated rather than dry, a little congestion along the chin, a patch that needs calming. They will tell you what they see in plain words.
Then a gentle exfoliation, chosen for your skin, to lift away the dull surface layer. Your skin is often softened with warmth at this stage, through steam or warm towels, so it is ready for what comes next.
The extractions question
This is the part first-time guests ask about most. Extractions are the gentle clearing of clogged pores, done by hand. Not every skin needs them, and not every guest wants them.
On our menu, extractions are a separate choice: Extractions Add On, $15 for an extra 15 minutes. That means you are never surprised by them. If your esthetician sees congestion, they will mention it and you decide. If your skin does not need them, they will say so.
That is how we work in every treatment room. No hard sell. If your skin needs nothing extra, you will hear that, plainly.
If you do choose extractions, expect a little pressure for a short while, and maybe some pinkness afterward that settles within a few hours. Your esthetician works carefully and will check in with you.
The quiet part
Once the work is done, the facial turns restful. A masque goes on, chosen for what your skin needs that day, and while it works, the massage begins. The Elemental Nature Facial includes a hand, arm, decollete and foot massage, and for many guests this is the moment they did not expect to love so much.
Some guests talk through this part. Many fall quiet, and some fall asleep. All of that is fine. The room is yours for the hour.
If you are booking a 60-minute facial this fall, ask about adding a complimentary enhancement. It is a nice way to try one extra step on your very first visit, and your esthetician can suggest the one that suits your skin.
The facial finishes with the final products your esthetician chose for you, so your skin is fully cared for when you sit up.
What your skin looks like walking out
Most guests notice that their skin looks fresh, even and quietly glowing, and that it feels soft when they touch their cheek. Skin that had extractions may be a little pink at first. That usually fades within a few hours, so if you have a dinner that night, you will be fine.
Before you leave, your esthetician will tell you what they noticed and suggest one or two simple steps for home. We recommend a small routine, not a cabinet full of products, and nothing on the shelf is required. What you do at home decides how long the result lasts, so even one good product makes a difference.
If you loved it, ask how often your skin would benefit from a visit. A solid rebook and the right home care are the two best things we can send you out the door with.
What we tell our friends
Skip makeup for the rest of the day if you can. Your skin has just been cleansed, exfoliated and fed, and it looks its best left alone for a few hours.
Hold off on scrubs, strong exfoliating products and retinol for a day or two after your first facial. Your skin has had plenty of attention.
And if an hour feels like too much for a first try, the Focus Facial 30 Min is $85. It is an express facial for your specific skin concern, and it includes a relaxing mini hand and scalp massage. It is a lovely way to find out what you like.

Questions we hear at the desk
Should I take off my makeup before my first facial?
No need. Come as you are. Your esthetician removes makeup as the first step of the cleanse, and seeing your skin the way it looks on an ordinary day actually helps. Just give yourself a few extra minutes to arrive, and mention any prescription skin care or recent skin reactions at the start.
Do extractions hurt, and do I have to get them?
Extractions are optional. On our menu they are the Extractions Add On, $15 for 15 extra minutes, so you decide. Most guests describe a little pressure rather than pain, and any pinkness usually settles within a few hours. If your skin does not need them, your esthetician will tell you so.
Which facial should I book for the first time?
For most first-time guests, we suggest A Elemental Nature Facial 60min at $135. It is customized to your skin and includes a hand, arm, decollete and foot massage. If an hour feels like a lot, the Focus Facial 30 Min at $85 is a shorter express option for one specific concern.
Can I wear makeup after a facial?
You can, but your skin looks its best left bare for the rest of the day. It has just been cleansed, exfoliated and moisturized, and many guests like the fresh look. If you have plans that evening, wait a few hours and use a light touch. Skip scrubs and retinol for a day or two.
Your first facial should feel like a gift, not a test. We are at 5054 N Palm Ave in Fig Garden Village, open seven days a week, with free parking and no meters. Tell us a little about your skin when you book, and our licensed estheticians will take it from there.
