The Scalp Treatment Most Guests Have Never Tried

On the first genuinely cool mornings in Fresno, something funny happens at the shampoo bowl. A guest sits back, we start the warm water, and she says some version of the same thing: my hair feels flat, and washing it does not seem to fix it. She is usually right. And it is usually not the shampoo.
The fix is a service most of our guests have walked past for years without trying: a scalp exfoliation. It is a short, deeply satisfying treatment that clears away what a regular wash leaves behind, and it is one of the few things that makes fine hair sit up again the same day. Here is what it is, what it feels like in the chair, who notices the biggest difference, and the small home step that keeps it going.
So what is a scalp exfoliation?
Think of it as a facial for your scalp. Before anything else touches your hair, your stylist works a gentle exfoliant across the scalp to clear away excess oil, surface pollution, and the product and mineral buildup that a normal shampoo cannot reach. The scalp is skin, and like the skin on your face, it holds onto more than you would guess.
At Amenities it is an Aveda Scalp Solutions service, which fits who we are. We have been the only full-service Aveda concept spa in Fresno since 2003, and Aveda's products are plant-based and 96% naturally derived. The Scalp Solutions Exfoliating Treatment (add on) starts at $55 and takes about fifteen minutes, added to any haircut or shampoo and blow-dry.
One honest note our stylists always give: it cannot be done right before or right after a color service. So if you are coming in for color, plan the scalp treatment for a different visit.
Why buildup lands hardest on fine hair
Everyone gets buildup. Dry shampoo, styling foam, hard valley water, and the oil your scalp makes on its own all collect at the root over days and weeks. On thick, coarse hair you may never notice. On fine hair, you notice fast.
Fine hair depends on lift at the root to look like anything at all. Coat that root in buildup and the hair lies down flat, looks limp by lunchtime, and goes greasy a day sooner than it used to. Washing more often only strips the lengths and sends the scalp into making even more oil.
Clearing the scalp instead of just the hair is what breaks that loop. Many guests with fine hair tell us the difference is obvious the moment they stand up from the bowl: the hair feels lighter, and the roots actually hold a little height.
What it feels like at the bowl
This is the part nobody expects to enjoy as much as they do. Every visit starts the same way, with Aveda's comforting tea and a warm neck wrap while you settle in. Then you are back at the bowl, the water warm, and your stylist begins working the exfoliant across your scalp in slow, deliberate circles.
It is equal parts clean and calming. There is a light tingle, the fresh scent of the Aveda formula, and several minutes of real scalp massage that most guests would happily pay for on their own. By the time the water runs clear, the tension at your hairline has usually gone with it.
If you want more than the fifteen-minute add-on, there are two ways to go further. The Scalp Solutions Exfoliating Treatment w/ Blowdry starts at $110 and gives you the full exfoliation, wash, and a finished blow-dry in about seventy-five minutes. Or, for the full wind-down, A Rest & Recovery Scalp Treatment starts at $165 and runs a full hour: a consultation on your hair and scalp, a hand and arm massage, a calming blend of essential oils, a soothing eye mask, and a long, thorough scalp massage and wash.
Who notices the biggest difference?
If your roots go flat and oily faster than they used to, this is for you. The same goes for anyone who leans on dry shampoo between washes, since that is one of the biggest sources of the buildup we are clearing.
Fine and thinning hair benefit the most, because a clean, clear scalp is the best possible starting point for everything that follows, from a blow-dry to the products you use at home. We are careful here: a scalp treatment is a grooming service, not a medical one, and it will not change how much hair you have. What many guests do notice is that the hair they have looks fuller and behaves better.
It is also a quiet favorite before a big event. Book it the week of a wedding or a holiday party and your style has the cleanest possible canvas to sit on.
The home step that keeps it going
A scalp treatment is a reset, not a one-time cure, and what you do at home decides how long it lasts. We are not going to send you home with a cabinet full of products. One or two is plenty.
The single most useful habit is a clarifying wash about once a week to keep buildup from creeping back, with your usual shampoo the rest of the time. If your scalp tends to feel tight, oily, or out of balance, the Scalp Solutions line is built to carry the in-salon treatment into your routine. Ask your stylist which one fits your hair. If your scalp needs nothing new, you will hear that too.
What we tell our friends
Add it to a haircut. Fifteen minutes at the start of an appointment you were already booking is the easiest way to try it, and this fall there is a reason to: see the offer below.
Ask for the scalp massage to run long. It is the best part, and your stylist is glad to linger there. And if you have been meaning to give yourself an actual hour of quiet, the Rest & Recovery hour is the one to book.
Coming into Amenities is not just about luxury and pampering. It is about wellness. A clean, cared-for scalp is where healthy-looking hair starts, which is why this quiet little service has such loyal fans once people finally try it.

Questions we hear at the desk
How often should I get a scalp exfoliation?
For most guests, every four to six weeks keeps buildup from settling back in, which lines up neatly with a regular haircut. If you use a lot of dry shampoo or styling product, you may want it a little more often. Your stylist can suggest a rhythm once they see your scalp.
Will it make my fine or thinning hair fuller?
It will not change how much hair you have, and we would never promise that. What a clean, clear scalp does is give your hair the best starting point, so a blow-dry holds better and the roots sit with more lift. Many guests with fine hair notice the difference the same day.
Can I get a scalp treatment with my color appointment?
Not on the same visit. The exfoliation cannot be done right before or right after a color service, so we book it for a separate appointment. It pairs beautifully with a haircut or a shampoo and blow-dry instead, and that is the most popular way our guests add it.
How is this different from a clarifying shampoo at home?
A home clarifying wash is a good habit, and we will recommend one. The in-salon treatment goes further: a dedicated exfoliant worked across the whole scalp, several minutes of massage, and a thorough rinse you cannot quite give yourself in your own shower. One supports the other.
How much is it and how long does it take?
The Scalp Solutions Exfoliating Treatment (add on) starts at $55 and takes about fifteen minutes. Want more? The version with a wash and blow-dry starts at $110, and A Rest & Recovery Scalp Treatment is a full hour starting at $165. The front desk can confirm the exact price when you book.
