Your Summer Blonde Feels Too Bright Now. Here Is What We Do About It.
Somewhere around the first cool morning in October, the same sentence starts coming up in our chairs. A guest looks in the mirror, pulls a piece of hair forward, and says, my blonde feels too bright now.
And the guest is right. The color that looked perfect against a July tan and a white tank top can look a little flat against a sweater and paler fall skin. Nothing is wrong with the color. The season moved, and the hair did not.
Here is how our colorists warm things up for fall, what each option costs at Amenities, and how to keep that rich color from fading before the holidays.
Why fall color looks warmer
Summer light is harsh and bright, so cool, icy tones read as clean. Fall light is lower and softer, and it pulls warmth out of everything around you. Gold, honey, caramel and deeper brunette tones catch that light instead of fighting it.
There is a practical side too. After a Fresno summer of sun, chlorine and dry valley air, most blonde hair is lighter and more porous than it was in June. Adding a little depth back in usually makes it look healthier, not just darker.
You do not have to go dark to go warm. Most of our fall color is a shift of one or two shades, the kind people notice as you look great, not as you changed your hair.
Three ways to get there
Which one is right depends on how far you want to move and how much you want to spend. Our colorists usually start by asking one question: do you want it to look different, or just look right again?
- Just look right again: Tone Refresh with Blow-dry, $80 to $115. A gloss over your existing color that pulls brassiness or harsh brightness into a warmer, softer shade. It is the smallest change and the fastest appointment, and it is often all a summer blonde needs.
- A softer, warmer blend: Partial Balayage with Blow-dry, $330 to $360. Hand-painted pieces around your face and through the top, where the light hits first. Good if you like your current color but want it to melt into fall.
- A real seasonal change: Full Balayage with Blow-dry, $380 to $425. Painted throughout, so we can deepen the root, warm the mid-lengths and keep brightness where you want it. This is the one for rich caramel over a darker base, or blonde that grows out gracefully through spring.
What the appointment actually feels like
Both balayage services start with a short phone consultation before you ever sit down. It sounds formal, but it is really just a conversation with your colorist about where your hair is now, what you have loved and hated before, and a photo or two. It means we book the right amount of time and you do not spend the first twenty minutes of your appointment explaining yourself.
Before anything starts, we will bring you a cup of Aveda comforting tea and a warm neck wrap. In the chair, balayage is slower and quieter than foils. Your colorist paints section by section with Aveda color, our exclusive color line since 2003. It is largely plant-derived and has a soft botanical scent instead of that sharp salon smell. Most guests notice the difference right away.
Then comes the part everyone looks forward to. At the shampoo bowl you get a warm rinse with Aveda aromas, and a neck, shoulder and scalp massage is yours for the asking. Every one of these services finishes with a blow-dry, so you walk out with the color looking the way it is meant to.
One thing we tell our friends
Book your fall color two to three weeks before the event you care about, not the week of. Warm tones settle in beautifully after a few washes, and that also leaves room for a quick tone refresh if you want to adjust the shade.
And bring the photo of the color you do not want. It tells your colorist more than a dozen pictures of the color you do.
Will it fade by Thanksgiving?
Warm tones fade faster than cool ones, mostly from hot water, sulfates and sun. The good news is that the fix happens at home, in the shower.

Questions we hear at the desk
Do I have to go darker for fall?
No. Warmer is not the same as darker. Many of our fall appointments keep the same brightness and simply trade icy tones for golden or honey ones, which reads as a seasonal change without losing your blonde.
Why do I need a phone consultation for balayage?
So we book the right amount of time and plan the color before you arrive. It takes a few minutes, and it means your appointment starts with painting, not paperwork.
How long will warm color last?
With cool water and color-safe shampoo and conditioner, most guests are happy for six to eight weeks. A tone refresh in between keeps it rich without a full appointment.
Is Aveda color gentler on my hair?
Aveda color is largely plant-derived, and many guests notice their hair feels softer and smells better after color than they are used to. Your colorist will still tell you honestly what your hair can take.
