Why Your Skin Feels Tight in the Fall, and the Facial That Helps

You notice it first with your foundation. It used to melt into your skin, and now it sits on top of it. Your face feels a little tight after you wash it, and the glow you had in August has gone somewhere.
That is not your imagination, and it is not age catching up overnight. A long valley summer of sun and air conditioning, followed by the first dry fall days, is hard on skin. It is also why fall is the season our estheticians book up fastest.
Here is what is actually going on, the four facials we reach for this time of year, what each one costs, and how to keep the results going at home.
What summer did to your skin
Months of sun thicken the outer layer of skin, so it reflects less light. That is the dullness. Weeks of air conditioning and then dry, windy fall days pull water out of it. That is the tightness.
The result is skin that is dry on the surface but often still congested underneath, which is why a heavier moisturizer alone rarely fixes it. It needs to be cleared out and then given water, in that order.
Four facials, and who each one is for
Our estheticians choose the facial after they look at your skin, not before, so treat this as a guide rather than a menu you have to get right. If you are unsure, book the one that sounds closest and tell us what is bothering you.
- Elemental Nature Facial, 60 minutes, $135. Our Aveda facial and the best first visit. A deep cleanse, gentle exfoliation, and a mask and massage chosen for what your skin needs that day. If your skin just feels off, start here.
- Microdermabrasion Facial, 60 minutes, $185. For the dull, rough, foundation-sits-on-top feeling. It buffs away the built-up surface layer so skin looks brighter and your moisturizer can actually get in.
- Luminant Glow Peel Facial, 60 minutes, $185. For uneven tone and the dark spots summer left behind. A professional peel from Comfort Zone that brightens, followed by calming care so skin is not left raw.
- Sublime Deluxe Lift Facial, 75 minutes, $220. Our most indulgent facial, built around firmness and fine lines, with extra time for massage. The one guests book before a big event or simply because they have earned it.
What happens once the door closes
It starts before the treatment room, with a cup of Aveda comforting tea and a warm neck wrap while you settle in. The treatment rooms are dim and warm, and the first thing you will notice is how quiet it is. Your esthetician starts by looking at your skin under a light and asking a few questions, then the cleansing begins.
Expect warm towels, a mask or two, and more hand, neck and shoulder massage than most people expect from a facial. A lot of guests fall asleep somewhere in the middle. That is a compliment, and you are welcome to.
Before you leave, your esthetician will tell you what they noticed and what, if anything, to change at home. You will not get a hard sell. If your skin needs nothing new, you will hear that too. Our motto for more than 25 years in Fig Garden Village has been What's Best For The Guest, and sometimes that means sending you home with nothing but the glow.
One thing our estheticians tell their friends
Book your fall facial in October, not December. Skin takes a few weeks to show the full result of a treatment, and the holidays are when you will want it at its best. A facial in the first half of fall carries you right through the parties and the photos.
And for the week before, skip at-home scrubs and retinol unless your esthetician says otherwise. It lets us do more in the room.
Keeping the glow going at home
The facial clears the way. What you do at home decides how long the result lasts. For fall, the priority is water first and protection second, and it takes less than people think.
These are the products our estheticians send guests home with most this time of year, and they are on our shelf right now.

Questions we hear at the desk
How often should I get a facial?
Every four to six weeks is ideal, because that is roughly how long skin takes to renew itself. Once a season is still worth doing, especially in the fall after summer sun.
Which facial should I book for my first visit?
The Elemental Nature Facial. It gives your esthetician an hour to learn your skin, and they can recommend a more targeted facial for next time if you need one.
Will a peel make my skin peel or look red?
Most guests leave with skin that looks brighter and a little pink for a few hours at most. Your esthetician chooses the strength for your skin and tells you exactly what to expect before starting.
Can I wear makeup afterward?
We suggest giving your skin the rest of the day off if you can. If you have somewhere to be, mineral makeup is the gentlest choice.
Tell us what your skin is doing this fall, and we will book you with the right esthetician and the right facial.
