The Aveda Best Sellers Our Guests Buy Again (and Who Each One Is For)

There is a moment at the front desk we see several times a day. A guest holds up her phone with a photo of the bottle she is almost out of, or she says the one we all recognize: it was the blue one, I think, with the mint smell.
After more than 25 years in Fig Garden Village, we have a pretty good sense of which Aveda products guests actually finish and come back for. Those are the ones worth writing about.
Here is the short version of what each one does and who it suits, so the next bottle you buy is the right one.
First, why we only carry one brand
Aveda has been our exclusive partner since 2003, and we have never walked that back. The products are plant based, 96% naturally derived, vegan and cruelty free.
Our team motto for all of those years has been WBFG, what is best for the guest. On the retail shelf that means the same thing it means in the chair: the honest answer, even when the honest answer is that the bottle you already own is fine.
It also means our artists know the whole shelf cold. When someone recommends a shampoo to you, it is because they have used it on hundreds of heads of hair, including yours.
One more thing worth saying out loud: this is not a hard sell. If your hair needs nothing new, you will hear that instead. We would rather you leave with two things you will actually use than a bag of products that sit under the sink.
The two shampoos guests come back for
Rosemary Mint is the one people describe by its smell before they describe anything else. It is a light, clarifying wash that rinses away the film our valley water leaves behind, and the mint tingle at the bowl is the reason a lot of guests look forward to shampoo day. If your roots feel greasy by the second day, or your hair has gone flat and dull and you cannot say why, start here.
Shampure is the quieter one. The aroma is the same blend you smell when you walk through our doors, and it is a gentler daily wash for hair that is color treated, dry, or simply does not need to be stripped. Guests who use it tend to buy the conditioner in the same breath.
If you are torn between them, our artists usually ask one question: does your hair feel weighed down, or does it feel thirsty? Weighed down points to Rosemary Mint. Thirsty points to Shampure.
Both come in a liter, and both are the sizes we reach for at the bowl during your service, so what you smell here is what you take home.
- Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo and Weightless Conditioner: fine hair, oily roots, hard water buildup, anyone who loves a fresh scalp.
- Shampure Nurturing Shampoo and Conditioner: dry or color treated hair, sensitive noses, anyone who wants the salon aroma at home.
If your hair is fine and falls flat by lunchtime
Two products do most of the work here, and they are not interchangeable.
Thickening Tonic goes on damp hair, at the roots, before you dry. It gives the hair itself some grip, so a blowout holds instead of sliding back down by noon. Guests are usually surprised by how little you need.
Phomollient is a foam, and it is the one to reach for if your hair is fine enough that a cream or an oil would flatten it. It builds volume without the crunch people remember from the mousse of twenty years ago.
Used together, damp hair, tonic at the roots, a small amount of foam through the lengths, they are the closest thing we have to a salon blowout you can repeat at home.
If you have curls or waves
Be Curly Advanced Curl Enhancer Cream is the one our curly guests repurchase without being asked. It defines the curl and softens frizz on the days our dry valley air is working against you.
The trick most people miss is the timing. Work it through hair that is properly wet, not towel dried and half frizzed already, then leave it alone while it dries. Touching curls while they dry is what breaks the pattern up.
For the men in the chair
Men Pure-Formance Grooming Clay is a small tub that lasts a long time. It gives texture and hold with a matte finish, so hair looks thicker without looking wet or styled.
Warm a small amount between your palms first. Cold clay straight from the tub goes on in clumps, and that is usually the whole reason someone thinks a product is not working for them.
How to make a bottle last
A few things we tell our own friends and family.
Shampoo twice on the first wash after a long stretch, once after that. The first pass lifts the buildup, the second actually cleans the scalp. Conditioner belongs on the mid lengths and ends, not the roots.
Buy the liter of the shampoo you know you love. It is the same product and it outlasts several small bottles, which matters more than any single purchase.
And ask for the scalp massage at the bowl on your next hair service. It is there on request, most guests never think to ask, and it is the part people talk about on the way out.
If you are coming in just for product, give yourself a few extra minutes. You will be offered Aveda comforting tea and a warm neck wrap at the desk, and there is usually someone who can look at your hair while you are standing there.

Questions we hear at the desk
How do I know which shampoo is right for my hair?
Ask your artist at your next visit. They have their hands in your hair and can tell you in about ten seconds whether it is buildup, dryness or your water at home. A consultation is part of the service here, not a formality, and it costs nothing to ask.
Do I need the shampoo and the conditioner from the same family?
Not always. Many guests pair a clarifying shampoo with a richer conditioner, especially if their ends are dry but their roots get oily. Tell your artist how your hair behaves by day two and they will help you mix and match.
Is the liter size actually worth it?
If it is a product you have already finished once, yes. It is the same formula in a larger bottle and it lasts most guests months. If you have not used it before, start with the smaller size and see how your hair responds first.
Can I buy these without a service appointment?
Yes. Our front desk is open seven days a week and you are welcome to come in just for product. Parking in Fig Garden Village is free, no meters and no time limits, so it is an easy stop.
If you are not sure what belongs in your shower, book a service and ask your artist while they are working. That is the easiest way to get an honest answer for your hair, not for hair in general.
